How to Easily Fix Your Address on Google Maps

Being listed on Google Maps is essential for your multi-location businesses’  localized marketing strategy. But what happens when the location that pops up when people search for your business in Google Maps isn’t where your business is actually located?

All core publishers, including Google, Bing, Facebook, Yelp, and Foursquare, offer the ability to “drag and drop” map pins into place if they do not appear in the correct map locations. Because of Google’s prominence in the local listings space, most multi-location businesses choose to start with Google Maps when it comes time to fix their business address.

There are two ways to fix your business address on Google — on Google Maps or through your Google Business Profile (GBP), which you’ll need to be signed into. Here’s how to change your address via Google Maps:

  • Step 1: Open Google Maps on your computer, phone, or tablet. Note that we’ll focus on updating your business address on a computer for this example.

  • Step 2: Search for your business address.

  • Step 3: Click “Suggest an edit” and then select “Change name or other details”

  • Step 4: Then, enter the correct address. Make sure you correctly list the street number, name, town/city, zip code, and the suite number. If you’re within a shopping center, you can write its name in the “Located within” box. For more details on entering addresses without street numbers and other complex situations, review Google’s address entry guidelines.

  • Step 5: You can also adjust the pin location if it’s wrong. To do this, click “Edit map location.” Click and hold on to the map to move the map pin around. Make sure to click save after you’re done.

Now that you know how to fix your business locations in Google Maps, here’s how to update them in your Google Business Profile (GBP).

  • Step 1: Start by checking that the address you entered in your GBP is accurate. To do this, sign into the Google account that you used to sign up for your Business Profile. Then, search for your business name. You can also search for “my business.” Make sure there is no extraneous information that could be causing your business location to appear in the wrong place on Google Maps.

  • Step 2: To open your Business Profile, click “Edit profile” near the top and then go to “Business information.”

  • Step 3: Next, scroll to “Location and areas,” which is next to “Business location,” and click “Edit.”

  • Step 4: Like in Google Maps, ensure that you correctly enter the business’s address. Again, make sure to follow Google’s guidelines. Finally, click “Save.”

If you’ve entered your business address correctly and the pin on Google Maps is still showing up in the wrong location, you’ll need to manually drag your pin to the correct location. To do this, click “Adjust,” and move the map until the pinpoint is directly on top of your business location. Then, click “Done” and “Save.”

Note that Google typically reviews manual pin placements for quality before changes are published. You may need to wait 24-48 hours before the location status changes in your Business Profile Manager dashboard.

To fix incorrect map pins on other local listing platforms, like Yelp, Foursquare, Facebook, and Bing, head to your claimed dashboard and follow the instructions for correcting the map pin placement.

Because this process can be cumbersome, multi-location businesses will often work with companies like SOCi for support when fixing a large number of incorrect pin locations.
